I think I become addicted to reading about “secret” codes when I read Choke by Chuck Palahniuk. There was a part when his mother was telling him codes officers use to convey messages normal citizens should not know. He said, this is how the world will end (or something), just one announcement of code, and then nothing. I must have been so passionate about this subject that I searched for more. Here’s a list:

VESSEL CODES

Mr. Skylight - paged over the PA system is an alert for the crew on board and means there is a minor emergency somewhere.
Mr. Mob - means man overboard.
Code Blue - usually means a medical emergency
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, - used by many cruise lines to alert crew to a fire or other serious incident on board without alarming passengers.

NAME CODES

Code delta: can mean that there is a biological hazard.
Code Alpha: often means “medical emergency”.
Code Adam is a “missing child” safety program in the United States and Canada, originally created by Wal-Mart retail stores in 1994. It is named in memory of Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John Walsh (the host of Fox’s America’s Most Wanted.). Adam was abducted from a Sears department store in Florida in 1981 and was later found murdered.

COMPUTER USER ERROR CODES

A user error is an error made by the human user of a complex system, usually a computer system, in interacting with it. Although the term is sometimes used by Human Computer Interaction practitioners, the more formal human error term is used in the context of human reliability [via].

PICNIC: Problem In Chair Not In Computer.
ID 10 T Error: “Idiot error” are also used as slang in technical circles with a derogatory meaning.

HOSPITAL EMERGENCY CODES

Doctor Brown: is a code word often used in hospitals to alert security staff to a threat to personnel.

I’m not even sure why I’m writing this.

I adore notebooks and collect cute little pens. Not really the pens you see children are using, those that are too colorful it hurt your adult eye. No, not the ones with plastic action figure design, or embossed with so much cartoon art. The kinds like that of Bic, Pilot, Stabilo, et cetera—those that you see mostly in your office table and not give a damn about until you use them to sign some papers. Those are pencil case worthy for me, and they are what I use to draw illustrations of my frustrations, awe, dismay, passion, and bottled up thoughts. They are what I use to draw that lousy building adjacent my apartment, some architectural inspirations I know I’ll never be able to build, my palm that are lines of fate, your palm and your ways of doing things that I hate, my face that I dismembered every time I draw it, your face that I adore, and my anger towards you and the world.

I wish I could draw all these things again and again and waste more paper and ink. I wish I can draw my feelings, tear the paper apart, throw it, and forget everything about them after I do so. Like how I do in every rubbish in that garbage can.

Wozoco Apartments, Amsterdam.

The extravagant profile of Wozoco was born from one of the obstacles encountered during the project: the regulatory plan of Cornelis Van Eesteren limited the number of apartments per block to 87 units, and each tenant was promised good natural lighting. The client’s request later changed to 100 units per block. It was clear that the creation 13 more units per block would have to occupy another floor, which would further limit the green common space, yet another attitude the client wanted to fight. So the 13 additional units were suspended from the side of the main structure.

This idea has turned Wozoco into one of the most original buildings in the panorama of contemporary architecture: the thirteen “surplus” units were literally hung from the facade north of the main body, like large projected boxes, and in this way avoided occupying even more land.

I also want to ask you why out of the many options you can choose to be your platform for student council you choose a field trip. I know how it is being a student, and how a trip with your schoolmates may be very exciting for your year. But why is this your platform? I mean, I can understand if you’re school doesn’t hold such happenings but if they do, then this will be really pointless.

What I mean to say is, I can’t tell you anything substantial for a matter I don’t approve. I can’t tell you what you want me to say, I can’t tell you to tell them “go on! we guys need to spend another day on trips because this is essential!”. I don’t approve of this platform. I honestly think that this is very weak.

What I’m trying to say is, I advice you to think of another platform that will enhance your leadership skills and will enable you to really live up your future position. Leisure is okay, but you should focus more on the betterment of your student body—work on it to be more competitive. Fun? that can wait.

How can you convince them? Focus on being a good example—a student leader that thinks about the benefit of all and who will work on projects where everyone can cooperate, learn a lesson or two, and enjoy them. Remember that you’re in college and you guys should be working on things that will make you ready for what’s out there in the “real world.”

Last time, I blogged about the growing trend in Asian countries on dyeing their pet dogs to look like panda bears, now I learned that there are also “tiger dogs”. What’s next? Elephant-dogs?

Tigers are my favorite animals, dogs are adorable too. And I think this is just ridiculous—it’s like a desperate move to “cross-breed” a feline and a canine, or so it seem to me.

But whatever. As long as it doesn’t harm the animals and it doesn’t bring discomfort to them, this should be okay. But I don’t totally approve of this. The only adorable tiger-dog to me is something like…

Strange Animals Found Dead.

1. Montauk Monster

The “Montauk Monster” was an unidentified creature that washed ashore dead, on a beach near the business district of Montauk, New York in July 2008. The identity of the creature, and the veracity of stories surrounding it, have been the subject of unresolved controversy and speculation. Although the creature’s body was never recovered or physically examined, palaeozoologist Darren Naish studied the photograph and concluded from visible dentition and the front paws that the creature may have been a raccoon. The body of the “Mystery beast” was found in Panama in 2009 after being beaten to death by teenagers who were frightened by its weird features. Autopsy had been taken and the creature was then proved to be a sloth who lost its hair and with bloated stomach.

Firstly, I’d like to know why people are asking me questions for their papers.

Secondly, I’d like you to elaborate why are you supposed to be mean or something. Hey, I am employed.

Thirdly, okay, I’ll answer this question anyway. I was thinking why there is unemployment. I want to know the reason why people are unemployed. Is the population too young to work? Too old? Unable? Unable how? I am wondering what the government is doing about this problem.

In the Philippines, 8% of the population belongs to the “unemployed” group. That’s about 3 million Filipinos doing whatever they do aside from getting a job. The economy is a huge contributing factor why this is happening. The better the economy, the more job there will be available. They say education is a factor too, but I don’t know how people who graduated with a degree still find it hard to find a job. It is also sad that people say some of us just do not have the ability to get a decent job because we are weak, and more embarrassingly, that accuse about us being lazy. Lazy how? I know there are people who just can’t work on their priorities, but if you went to college and spent a large sum of money just for you to get a degree…I don’t know if being lazy after schooling should be an option (unless of course if you’re a billionaire).

I guess what I am really trying to say is there’s a root to every problem. Maybe that root is the weak education system we have.

You see, I don’t understand why our government choose to spend money to go to other countries just to bargain the execution of three native drug mules. Why can’t they just strengthen the economy and offer a lot of jobs to the citizen so cases like this can be avoided.

But that’s another issue and I am running out of words.

The Wave is a sandstone rock formation located in the United States of America near the Arizona and Utah border on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes, in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, on the Colorado Plateau. It is famous among hikers and photographers for its colorful, undulating forms, and the rugged, trackless hike required to reach it.

The Wave is made of Jurassic-age Navajo Sandstone that is approximately 190 million years old. Scientists who study The Wave say that the old sand dunes turned into hard compacted rock over the ages, calcifying in vertical and horizontal layers. Erosion by wind and rain has created the spectacular landscape which appears now.The soft sandstone of The Wave is fragile, one needs to walk carefully to not break the small ridges. [via]

The atmospheric phenomenon known as a circumhorizon(tal) arc, or“Fire rainbow”, appears when the sun is high in the sky (i.e., higher than 58° above the horizon), and its light passes through diaphanous, high-altitude cirrus clouds made up of hexagonal plate crystals. Sunlight entering the crystals’ vertical side faces and leaving through their bottom faces is refracted (as through a prism) and separated into an array of visible colors. When the plate crystals in cirrus clouds are aligned optimally (i.e., with their faces parallel to the ground), the resulting display is a brilliant spectrum of colors reminiscent of a rainbow. Spotted Lake is very highly concentrated with numerous different minerals. It contains some of the highest quantities (in the world) of magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphates. Ghost Island, Japan.

“Battleship Island” is an English translation of the Japanese nickname for Hashima Island, Gunkanjima. The island’s nickname came from its apparent resemblance to a battleship, or gunkan (jima is a mutation of shima) due to its high sea-walls. It also is known as the Ghost Island. It is known for its coal mines and their operation during the industrialization of Japan. Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was retrieving coal from the bottom of the sea. They built Japan’s first large concrete building, a block of apartments in 1916 to accommodate their burgeoning ranks of workers, and to protect against typhoon destruction. [via]
